First observe of how many Notes compass the Tune is. Next, the place of your first Note; and how many Notes above & below that: so as you may begin the Tune of your first Note as the rest may be sung in the compass of your and the peoples voices, without Squeaking above, or Grumbling below.

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing, July 14, 2019.

St. Paul’s Church, Carroll Gardens. Singing from The Sacred Harp, Denson 1991 (SH) and Cooper 2012 (CB) Editions, and from The Shenandoah Harmony (ShH).

A very enjoyable singing graced with the rare presence of our old friends Eric and Sarah H and new friend Eliza the Baby, and I was thrilled to have so many folks come over afterwards for Ice Cream Social, with upstairs singing and late deck time. I recommend an ice cream party to anyone who wants to spread pleasure among her friends in a child-safe manner. Although we did, of course, have drinks, so. And thanks to everyone for generously managing the door-opening system that will be standard from now on. We will miss Stefani’s FRIENDSHIP here but wish her a wonderful time in grad school. (Does that even make sense? Yes, yes it does.)

Present: Gwen, Geoff, Jenny, Annie, Paul, Ben S-H, Sam, Charles, Nancy B., Stefani, Elsa, Jon, Jasmine, Sarah, Quinn, Jaime, Patrick, Eric, Sarah (and Eliza), Anna, Molly, nbm. As always, corrections welcomed.

Collected: $45, plus $50 for one copy each SH and ShH, of which I’ll save half for our New Edition fund and Myles will sell me a replacement ShH.

Brooklyn singing June 2019, notes (sans names)

I can’t claim I didn’t have time, but I didn’t get around to filling in the tune names. I’ll come back to it. Meanwhile, have fun seeing how many you can name!

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing, June 14, 2019. St. Paul’s Church, Carroll Gardens. Singing from The Sacred Harp, Denson 1991 (SH) and Cooper 2012 (CB) Editions, and from The Shenandoah Harmony (ShH).
The room we sing in is handsome, with its Gothick leaded casements, and sounds good. But it’s a little dim, especially in winter and in the center of the square, since the elaborate chandeliers are spaced close to the edge, and there were quite a few bulbs out on top of that. Several months ago I mentioned it in a note to the rector, but nothing was done. So this month I brought some bulbs. And Paul brought some bulbs. And Myles brought some bulbs. And meanwhile, the bulbs had been replaced!

Present: Paul, Sarah, Elsa, Nancy B., Molly, Geoff, Brandon, Gwen, Jaime, Ben, Myles, Annie, Jon, Jenny, Carol, Alice W. New: Louis, Chris G., Gabe; Max Grafe’s friends Chelsea and Tim. Visiting: Jimmy from Philadelphia

Collected: $63. Thanks for your generosity.

Cooper Book 567, CHILD OF THINE

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing, April 14, 2019 — notes

St. Paul’s Church, Carroll Gardens. Singing from The Sacred Harp, Denson 1991 (SH) and Cooper 2012 (CB) Editions, and from The Shenandoah Harmony (ShH). (Or Sharmony, its new Brooklyn moniker, granted by Kim.)

Another good-sounding singing, with a certain amount of attention to the day’s leafy theme. We were favored with visits from Stacey B and Deidra M. No one wanted to take on management* of the singing, so I did that as usual, while Jaime offered the brief lesson and Patrick and Jaime joined me in pitching (where needed; quite a few folks pitched for themselves). Thanks to Nancy and Sarah for delicious snacks.

* The offer stays open for anyone to be the coordinator in future months; a checklist is below on this site and I’ll mention it in the May announcement.

Present: Ben S-H, Myles, Sarah, Nancy B., Stefani, Elsa, Patrick, Jaime, Paul, Jon, Carol, nbm. Returning: Artemis. Visiting: Stacey B., Deidra M., Kim Dakan, Jacob. New: Geoff Kurtz, Kim’s friend Elizabeth.

Collected: $36.

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing, March 10, 2019 — notes

At St. Paul’s Church, Carroll Gardens.

What a good-sounding singing. At the suggestion of Myles and Ben, we opened up time for new songs: there were eight, and each one was greatly worth singing (listed below, of course). We’ll do this again, and I hope more people will bring songs, their own or others’. Singing from The Sacred Harp, Denson 1991 (SH) and CB 2012 (CB) Revisions, and from The Shenandoah Harmony (ShH).  As always, let me know if I’ve made a mistake in transcription.

Present: Ben S-H, Myles, Sarah, Nancy B., Stefani, Ezra, Mary Jane, Jasmine, Patrick, Lynn, Jaime, Brandon, Colman. Visiting: Steven Burt, Alice W. New: Emma, Lucy, Connie and her daughter Sarah. We collected $67, the most ever. I’ll make our quarterly contribution at April’s singing.

Brooklyn Singing Checklist

IMG_20181209_145507Please let me know if you think anything is wrong or missing. Once it’s settled, I can print a copy or two for the file.

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing checklist

Unlock the downstairs door by 2:00 [it is sometimes open]. Use the key marked H or P (different in diff. key sets) on the top lock.

Organize setup:
Move the table
Make the square
Find a folding chair or two (might need to look downstairs)
Set out the books
Find, fill, and plug in the hot water kettle
Get the white box with tea equipment out
Put up a sign on the gate and/or the door (optional but nice; there’s tape in the box)

Open the singing:
Greet newcomers and note that the call goes around the room, bathroom downstairs
If needed, give a quick introductory lesson
— It’s advisable to wait till a few songs in
— Maybe offer the teaching opportunity to another singer

Pitch or recruit pitchers, or both – we often divide up the job by book
Keep track of time (break will fall about 3:30)
Call the break, ask for donations, and have announcements
Lead a callback or ask someone else to do so
Announce nearly closing, ask for cleanup help and pick a closer-picker

Oversee resetting the room:
Table back to the center
Unplug & empty the teakettle
Books and white box back on the shelves
Count the money and hold for me (or slip under Fr. Wallace’s office door with a note)
Take out the trash; need to open the gate into the church sideyard (key marked G-D)
Take down the sign
Lights out

LOCK UP the entry door after the last singer is out of the building.
