Singing from the Sacred Harp, 1991 Denson (SH) and 2012 Cooper (CB) editions, and from the Shenandoah Harmony (ShH). Amazing turnout with really special guests: our dear friend Jon in town from LA, Elizabeth and Robert Stoddard down from Maine for the opera and us (different kinds of yowling, some might argue), Lari from Toronto, and Jacob H. from Maryland, passing through on a harpsichord transport mission. Plus a glimpse of Lindsay. And new people aplenty, so that I have missed a name or two and welcome correction and additions.

The anthems session turned out super fun! Thanks to everyone for jumping in with a will (and to Lari for reminding us when it was time to pause the brain-twisters). We will do it again in a few months.

Singing from the Sacred Harp, 1991 Denson (SH) and 2012 Cooper (CB) editions, and from the Shenandoah Harmony (ShH). What a spirited, full-sounding singing (not too L O U D, a known bugbear of mine), though it was not very large and despite the absence of some friends of the singing at Western Mass and, of course, at ordinary other things that people do. New singers asked intelligent questions and seemed to be catching on and enjoying themselves. We had a sweet little aftersinging, too, at which Kevin called ShH 199 CARLISLE, a tune we were unfamiliar with, for revenge, but it turned out we loved it, so let’s sing that next month.

Per the suggestion last month, we will have a session of anthems at April’s singing. If you want to, pick out an anthem (or ode) or two that you’d like to learn and look it over – not to perfect it, but enough that you can guide our work on it on the day. I’ll send out a reminder with a list of the relevant songs in a couple of weeks, though of course you don’t have to wait for that to choose your tune(s).

Well, I thought it was a really fun and even joyful singing, and also sounded sweet (a lot of the time, not, I admit, all of it). I felt this despite having poured boiling water on my hand at the break, so I truly hope that those who did not so brand themselves enjoyed it.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the singing school, and who was patient with school-y things continuing into the singing proper. I thank Ryan especially for his productive questions and good-natured reactions. He prompted an idea that we set aside an hour or a session specifically to work on anthems and odes, the often longer, fancier, more complex pieces that we sing seldom at regular singings and then are thrown by when we encounter them at big singings. Let’s give ourselves a little time to prepare and discuss, and plan it for April’s BK singing, okay?

Thanks to the group for coping with the new rule that we couldn’t move the GIANT TABLE that is in the MIDDLE OF THE ROOM as well as with the old problem of bad lighting. We still love the Library, though. And of course it was a delight to have such a great crew back to my apartment for Fasolatke 2023! Thanks for your company and all the delicious things to eat and drink alongside the latkes. I am pretty sure the secret to the vegan potato-corn latkes you all liked so much was that I boiled and mashed one potato to serve as a matrix to keep the shredded potatoes and corn together, giving it that thicker, chewier texture.
