First observe of how many Notes compass the Tune is. Next, the place of your first Note; and how many Notes above & below that: so as you may begin the Tune of your first Note as the rest may be sung in the compass of your and the peoples voices, without Squeaking above, or Grumbling below.

October 2016 singings in New York City

Late on this (as on much else). Second Sunday in BK as usual; Wednesday singing October 12 will have to move, location not yet discovered so watch your emails and the NYC singing FB page; Third Sunday at Epiphany as far as I know; Christian Harmony sendoff party on the 22nd courtesy Mary Ellen as regular Menno House meetings will be on hiatus for the holiday months of November and December and Keystone conflict in January. (But look out for a supplementary seven-shape house singing some time in those three months.) Out of town: New York State singing in Ithaca, Oct. 15-16; Sadsbury (PA) Cooper Book singing Saturday Oct. 22.

kinda creepy cupid

Okay, First Sunday’s come and gone; I got in about forty minutes after my chorus’ performance in Brooklyn. Second Sunday Brooklyn will be a Valentine’s Day Singing, so I figure an appropriate follow-on will be chocolate fondue and other sweets. Aldo said something a couple of weeks ago about Third Sundays moving to Middle Collegiate for a while, but I believe that’s planned for spring or summer, so expect the UES singing to go forward at Ch. of the Epiphany as usual on Feb. 21. Melissa will be organizing the Christian Harmony session on Saturday before Fourth Sunday, February 27, but I expect some of us (including me) will be at the Catskills All Day Singing in Phoenicia, New York. I had a chance to sing with Chair Julia Reichel at Keystone and was vividly impressed by her spirit and energy.

Meanwhile, mini singing schools continue on Wednesday nights. Feb. 10 will see a mini-All Day to explore convention etiquette and song choice. Should be fun (though will be fun sans moi as I’ll be at a concert).

CHRISTIAN HARMONY HOME SINGING, Jan. 30, 2016 — notes

land of harmony

I searched “harmonium” on the Digital Public Library of America site (dp.la) and all the pictures were of missions in Africa and India, courtesy of a collection at USC. Go figure.

CHRISTIAN HARMONY HOME SINGING
January 30, 2016

Present: Andre, Nancy B., Jamie, Aldo, Jon, Sam, Sabdh, Jasmine, Carol, Chris C. Charles, Melissa, Lindsay, nbm.

These are merely partial notes, maybe 80% of the tunes and 70% of the callers.* I was distracted by cooking and other things.  And no notes were taken of the after-lunch (but before-dessert) session with the Daily Primitive Baptist Harmony, copies kindly provided by Sam. Still, it will give an idea of the rep we got through and remind us of songs we enjoyed, or didn’t.  If you have anything to add (or correct: I can’t always read my own scrawl), I’d be glad to hear it. Please be reassured that the folks noted as “thinking of” are not dead, just not with us on the day.

The menu was: chicken chili, chickpea-squash Moroccan stew, rice, and broccoli, accompanied by cilantro, scallions, yogurt, and sour cream.  We were further honored with contributions of hummus, olives, kimchee, cheese, crackers, and other snacks, and a heroically gorgeous apple pie from Nancy Britton. Thanks, most profoundly, to everyone for coming and making it so much fun. Regular Saturday before Fourth Sunday CH singing returns at Menno House in February (Feb. 27).

Christian Harmony singing Sat. Jan 30

nypl.digitalcollections.a8fddf30-1388-728f-e040-e00a180664b1.001.wSeven-shape devotees, here’s the plan. We’ll start about 2:00 (leaving a little time to take off boots & get a cup of tea), take a brief break around 3:15, sing some more (this might be the time to get out the Daily Books that Sam is promising), have something more serious to eat about 4:30, and sing again till six or till we’ve had enough, whichever comes first. I have six CH loaners (all I felt I could carry from Menno House); bear that in mind when deciding whether to bring your own.

If you want to bring something to share, may I suggest dessert or drinks? I could probably use more beer, right? Kind of on general principles.

My address is 96 Sackett Street #2, which is between Columbia and Van Brunt Streets on the edge of Carroll Gardens. The closest subway is the F to Carroll Street; if you’re at the back of the train (coming from Manhattan or points north) you’ll get out at Smith & President. Turn left; it’s two blocks to Sackett; turn left again and walk west. Call or text if you have questions: 347 423 2701. See ya!

New York City shapenote singing schedule, December UPDATED2015

ALERT: We will NOT sing at St. John’s this evening, Wednesday, December 23. A drinking-and-singing gathering at McSorley’s on East Seventh Street will take place instead at 7:00.

So far as I know, we’ll sing every Wednesday night through the month; on Dec. 2 we’ll be at St Peter’s, Chelsea (20th Street between 8th & 9th) instead of St. John’s. I’ll update if there are any changes.

Saturday, Dec. 5, is the Lehigh Valley All-Day Singing, at the UU Church in Bethlehem, PA, with a social at Hunter Hill Farm (and I trust a baby-viewing and -worshipping session). Our First Sunday singing follows on Dec. 6 at Jimmy’s No. 43. Second Sunday in Brooklyn should be vigorous, with the lure of latke party at my house following (what? It’s Hanukkah!).  Third Sunday at Ch.of the Epiphany as usual. No Christian Harmony this month, as it falls on the Christmas holiday weekend. Keep your ears and eyes open for house singing opportunities.

June 2015 Brooklyn singing and other schedule issues

We’ll sing from three books in Brooklyn as usual on Second Sunday, June 14, 2:00 at St Paul’s, Clinton and Carroll Streets.  I have to be uptown at 7:00 so let’s patronize our favorite backyard beer bar in the neighborhood, Strong Place on Court Street, afterwards.  Third Sunday UES singing is off for the summer, but we will sing as part of the Porch Stomp sub-festival during Make Music New York on Sunday, June 21, the summer solstice.  We’ll probably sing two sets interspersed with some light explanation, at least some of it under Liggett Arch, between noon and 3:00.  To be there for the whole thing, take an early ferry (11 or 11:30) from the Battery or the foot of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. (It’s all explained here.)

Fourth Saturday Christian Harmony should go forward as usual. More to come.

Brooklyn (Joe Beasley) Second Sunday singing, September 9, 2012

At St. Paul’s Church, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, New York.  Singing from THE SACRED HARP, 1991 Denson edition, and other books (including the Cooper Book, 2006 Edition [CB], and others). The calls go round the room in this singing.

A small but avid singing, with a number of other-book songs.  Mary Ellen even had us singing seven shapes, with two songs from the Christian Harmony (CH) (she carefully provided us with a cheat sheet for the extra shapes).

Present: Terry, Bruce, Nancy B., Mary Ellen, Ann, Jon, Patrick, Abby, Ezra, Dorinda, nbm
