First observe of how many Notes compass the Tune is. Next, the place of your first Note; and how many Notes above & below that: so as you may begin the Tune of your first Note as the rest may be sung in the compass of your and the peoples voices, without Squeaking above, or Grumbling below.

Brooklyn Shapenote Singing, November 12, 2017

Singing from The Sacred Harp, Denson 1991 and Cooper 2012 (CB) Revisions, and from The Shenandoah Harmony (ShH), and from other four-shape sources. Such a good-sounding singing this month. We sang some seasonal songs and some pre-seasonal ones. I enjoyed ShH 320 WELLINGTON, which I’m not sure I’d sung before. The last few songs made up a moving final set.

At the break we met the new interim priest, Father Wallace, who had just that day given his first sermon at St. Paul’s. I was very pleased to meet him and urged him to let me know if he had any issues about our use of the space — and also to sing with us (in which I was joined by many singers). Father Wallace revealed that he had had a Sacred Harp question on his exams for his degree in Choral Conducting but said he hadn’t had much to do with it since. (He knew enough to ask what edition we were using.) He’s taken over the little office behind our singing room; there’s a spacious new bathroom downstairs that we are now using instead of the tiny one next to the office. He listened to the callback, ShH77 COLLINS, and went on his way.

A thoughtful volunteer, Sandy, also offered the use of a ground floor gathering room next to the bathroom if we preferred not to climb the stairs, but I could hear how pingy the sound was just talking in there, and no one seemed motivated to try it out. We love our library space. If, however, we ever have singers who can manage the stoop but not the flight of stairs, we can consider shifting down there.

We raised $27. I’ll deliver the quarterly donation and a note to the church this week.
